The MH17 National Monument, Park Vijfhuizen near Amsterdam Schiphol airport, in the Netherlands, following the tenth anniversary of the shooting down of flight MH17 by a surface to air missile fired from eastern Ukraine - an area controlled by pro-Russsian forces, killing 298 passengers. The memorial consists of an amphitheatre surrounded by 298 trees, which were for the most part planted by the victims’ relatives, representing each passenger or crew member. This in turn is surrounded by sunflower fields, echoing the site of the crashed aircraft in the Ukrainian sunflower fields. The focus of the memorial is a stainless steel ellipsoidal sculpture into which are engraved the names of each victim, which stands against a curved steel wall.
